C'mon, it's Perry f'n Farrell. How can you resist going to check out his newest creations and diving into some potential classics? The show was at Irving Plaza, or the new and now known Filmore NY @ Irving Plaza, the old and familiar stomping ground. Surprisingly it was not jammed and moving up close to the stage was effortless. He came out, the wonderfully chaotic Perry and his Satellite band members that included his wife Etty Lau Farrell. My initial reaction was to his appearance. He was scantily jazzed up in sparkles contorting himself in an almost off beat rhythm that actually had me questioning his sanity. Back in the day it would’ve been a lot less shocking but he’s also aged a bit since I last caught him live. Just as soon as he started talking to the crowd he was just graciously welcoming and genuinely accepting and excited about his surroundings. If you didn’t quite know him, it could’ve been mistaken for some type of elderly senility but in essence it was Perry being peaced-out Perry.

A snippet about the music… it was rocking in an old school sort of way. It was entertaining more than it was climactic but for me, and I’m sure a lot of the fans, it’s always been about his leading roles in Psi Com, Jane’s and PFP. The Satellite Party is just another one of his creative collaborations but expressed now, in our new day and age. His philosophies of love and acceptance shined within or even above the music. The set consisted of the following tracks: Wish Upon A Dog Star, Just Because Tahitian Moon, Mountain Song, Hard Life Easy, Superhero, Pets, Only Love, Let’s Celebrate, Been Caught Stealin’, Ultra Payloaded (Encore) Stop!, Intro Jam, Band Intros, Jane Says. A point was made of tapping into the old, which was very poignant but it could’ve rocked a lot harder and for that it needed the old school guitar playing of Navarro. Either way, it was a Perry crazed trip and I greatly relished in the evening and his vibe. He is unquestionably one of the greats in my record of musical heroes. Let’s just say that I proudly named my black poodle after him six years ago!

What was your favorite live music of 2007!?
